What Myth Is Holding You Back?

We all have a narrative. A story that runs like a movie in our mind, deeply connected to our subconscious. Sometimes that comes from our upbringing, negative thoughts, or just myths we’ve always believed.

The purpose of this article is to make you question what you consider to be true. Is it really legit? Or just something you’ve believed for so long its become truth? More importantly, is that belief helping or hindering you?

A recent example I’ve uncovered is the myth of perfect pitch. For anyone musically inclined, the notion of perfect pitch (being able to recognize the pitch of a note or produce any note) was long thought to be a natural gift bestowed upon 1 in 10,000 people. Beethoven and Mozart were thought to have had perfect pitch. Frank Sinatra had it (Miles Davis did not).

This was widely believed for 250 years – until 2014! In Anders Ericsson’s book “Peak”, he highlights an experiment conducted at the Ichionkai Music School in Tokyo and reported in the scientific journal Psychology of Music. Twenty-four children between ages 2-6 were put through months-long training to teach them how to identify, via sound, various chords played on a piano. Each child was given short training sessions each day until he or she could identify all 14 of the chords that Japanese psychologist Ayako Sakakibara had selected. Some children completed the training in less than a year, others took a year and a half.

In the end, each child was tested and found to have developed perfect pitch. All 24 of them! An incredible result given the widely accepted ‘truth’ that society believed for hundreds of years.

So – what does that mean for you? Ask yourself these questions:

  • What story or narrative am I telling myself that may not be true? How is that serving me?
  • What widely-held societal views may be holding me back? Are they valid?
  • What new belief can help me move past the barriers I currently have?

The point is this – so often what holds us back is our own construct/belief. You have 100% control over that and the power to change it.

Have an excellent day,

Ian
